Swift carries the message, not the money
Does Swift move money? No, says its own Who we are page, which states that “we don’t actually move money.” Swift describes itself as a secure messaging system that helps financial institutions send payment instructions, and the funds pass through the banks and other institutions themselves.
The National Bank of Belgium, which leads oversight of Swift together with the G10 central banks, puts the role the same way. Swift supports the exchange of financial messages between financial institutions and market infrastructures worldwide.
The network in numbers, November 8, 2026
Swift’s page that morning listed more than 12,500 connected institutions in more than 200 countries and territories, over 11,500 members and an average of more than 53 million FIN messages a day. How fast do those payments arrive? Swift says 90% of cross-border payments now reach the beneficiary bank in under an hour.
Reaching the bank is not the same as reaching you. The same page says delays often occur after the payment lands at the end bank and before it is credited to the customer, a stretch Swift calls the beneficiary leg.
On its GPI page, the tracking service it offers financial institutions, Swift says nearly 60% of GPI payments are credited to end beneficiaries within 30 minutes and almost 100% within 24 hours.
Where you meet it
The “SWIFT code” field on a wire form wants a BIC. Under ISO 9362, as Swift’s BIC page explains, the core code has 8 characters, made of a 4-character prefix for the institution, a 2-letter ISO 3166-1 country code and a 2-character suffix, and an optional 3-character branch code makes 11. Not every BIC is connected to the Swift network, the page adds.
The other place is the fee table. Exchange Kraken’s withdrawal page, updated November 4, 2026, prices the routes like this.
| Withdrawal | Fee | Minimum | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| USD by SWIFT (Bank Frick) | 13 USD | 100 USD | 1 to 5 business days |
| USD by FedWire, US only | 4 USD | 20 USD | 0 to 1 business days |
| EUR by SWIFT (Bank Frick) | 5 EUR | 100 EUR | 1 to 5 business days |
| EUR by SEPA (Bank Frick) | 1 EUR | 2 EUR | 0 to 5 business days |
For euro accounts the SEPA route costs a fifth as much at Kraken, and SEPA Instant transfers inside the area arrive in seconds. Kraken also notes that a transfer may be processed as SWIFT if the IBAN is not reachable by SEPA.
Why the amount can arrive short
The exchange’s fee may not be the whole bill. Kraken’s footnote warns that “additional SWIFT fees may apply,” and Swift’s own GPI page names “deducts” alongside processing times as something businesses need to see, warning that a lack of visibility on costs leads to uncertainty. Before sending a large wire, ask the sending and receiving banks what each will deduct.
