Counting the register
Germany has more crypto service providers on ESMA’s list than any other country, by a wide margin. The CASP file in the interim MiCA register, update dated November 5, 2026, has 397 rows for 394 firms, because three German firms appear twice.
| Home country | Rows in ESMA’s CASP file |
|---|---|
| Germany | 125 |
| France | 36 |
| Netherlands | 29 |
| Cyprus | 25 |
| Malta | 24 |
The German lead rests on notifications. Of its 125 rows, 117 are firms already supervised by BaFin, among them N26 Bank and Trade Republic Bank, that told the regulator they would offer crypto services under Article 60 of MiCA. Only eight German rows are licenses granted under Article 63.
Deadlines show up in the dates as well. Firms already serving clients under national law could carry on until July 1, 2026 at the latest, under Article 143, and 76 rows carry a June 2026 date, more than any other month.
Where you see it
Each row names the regulator, the legal entity and usually its brand, along with the services it may provide, lettered a to j after the ten that MiCA lists, and the countries it serves. A single license reaches beyond the home country because Article 65 lets a provider notify its regulator of the other member states it plans to serve.
Exchange Kraken shows why the legal name matters. Its EU business appears as Payward Europe Solutions Limited, authorized by the Central Bank of Ireland on June 25, 2025, with eight of the ten services and 30 countries listed, the 27 EU members plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway.
Payward’s row also gives the commercial name, but 26 rows in the file leave that field blank. Payment processors are filed by company name too, so a merchant looking for CoinGate, one of the processors in the guide to accepting stablecoin payments, has to search for UAB Decentralized.
Two traps
A firm outside the EU can’t count on clients finding it. Article 61 exempts a third-country firm only when an EU client approaches it “at its own exclusive initiative”, and any solicitation in the EU, by whatever means, ends that exemption.
The second file to know is the list of non-compliant entities, firms that a national authority has decided were providing crypto services in breach of Article 59 or 61. It had 189 rows in the November 5 update, and 180 of them came from Italy’s market regulator, CONSOB.
In the US and the UK
The GENIUS Act uses “digital asset service provider” for a business that, for profit, exchanges or transfers digital assets or acts as a custodian for people in the United States. From July 18, 2028, three years after enactment, such providers may not offer or sell a payment stablecoin there unless a permitted issuer issued it. In Britain, the FCA has opened applications for authorization under a regime it expects to start on October 25, 2027.
Before opening an account with a provider in the EU, download the CASP file from ESMA’s MiCA page, search for the company’s legal name and check which services and countries its row lists.
