ACH transfer

An ACH transfer is an electronic payment between US bank or credit union accounts over the Automated Clearing House network, the system behind direct deposit, bill pay and the free bank-transfer option at exchanges such as Kraken. Payments move in batches that settle a few times each business day, so an ACH transfer is often free at an exchange but rarely instant.

A network that moved $25.6 trillion in a quarter

Paychecks, rent, the mortgage, a top-up to an exchange account. All of these can travel the same rails. Nacha, the association that writes the ACH rules, reported on October 20, 2026 that the network carried 9.3 billion payments worth $25.6 trillion in the third quarter, up 5.9% and 10.2% on a year earlier.

The fast lane grew faster. Same Day ACH handled 470.4 million of those payments, up 36.7%, and their value reached $1.3 trillion against $970.4 billion a year before. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau describes the system simply, as electronic money transfers between banks and credit unions across the Automated Clearing House network.

When the money actually moves

Why does a transfer sent on Friday evening show up on Monday? Because the network works in batches on business days. According to Nacha’s ABCs of ACH, it processes payments 23ΒΌ hours every business day and settles them four times a day, but only while the Federal Reserve’s settlement service is open, which excludes weekends, federal holidays and 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. ET on business days.

The Fed’s FedACH schedule shows the same-day timetable for forward payments.

Bank submits by Settles
10:30 a.m. ET 1:00 p.m. ET, same day
2:45 p.m. ET 5:00 p.m. ET, same day
4:45 p.m. ET 6:00 p.m. ET, same day
A payment dated for a later day 8:30 a.m. ET on that business day

Exchanges add their own clock on top. Kraken’s withdrawal page, updated November 4, 2026, lists free ACH withdrawals taking 0 to 2 business days, with a 2pm EST cutoff.

Same Day ACH also has a ceiling. Nacha’s per-payment limit is $1 million today, and on September 17, 2027 it rises tenfold to $10 million.

A credit that can still come back

Treating an ACH deposit as final is the classic mistake. The CFPB warns that ACH payments can “bounce,” returned for nonpayment when the account lacks funds, and that checks against fraud and money laundering mean payments can take days to complete.

Unauthorized debits stay open much longer. Nacha’s rule page on return codes puts the return timeframe at 60 days for R11, the code for consumer debits that do not match what the customer authorized, and counts those returns as unauthorized under its rules. A payment that looks settled today can be pulled back weeks later.

Kraken, for one, says ACH deposits made through Plaid can be traded at once but face a seven-day withdrawal hold, one of the delays that make an on-ramp slower than its fee line suggests.
